Red Rooibos Tea – Health Benefits and Side Effects

- September 21, 2018

Learn the health benefits and possible side effect of red rooibos tea.

Rooibos tea (also called African red tea or red tea) is harvested from the South African red bush plant (scientifically name – Aspalathus linearis). Traditional rooibos tea is produced by fermenting the leaves, that turns them a red-brown color.

It is naturally caffeine-free tea with a mildly sweet and delicious taste and somehow similar with the taste of honey and roses. It’s quite popular in Germany, Japan, England, and Holland.

Nutritional profile

Rooibos tea is a source of minerals like Iron, Calcium, Copper, Potassium, Magnesium, and Zinc.

Health benefits of rooibos tea

Because of the high antioxidant levels, this tea has anti-inflammatory properties. These powerful antioxidants help protect the physical body by fighting free radicals (compounds produced within the body that attack healthy cells to stabilize themselves).

This tea is usually recommended during pregnancy and for those who are experiencing iron anemic because it may help with the absorption of iron and other minerals. Moreover, because the tea is naturally caffeine-free, it’s a perfect alternative to green or black tea, plus other soft drinks which contain caffeine.

Furthermore, it has no oxalic acid, thus, this tea can be consumed by patients who have kidney stones. More importantly, the tea seems to help the immune system produce antibodies necessary to heal from allergic reactions and is goof for cancer prevention.

This tea also contains quercetin, a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substances found in only in plants, and has numerous health benefits.

Side effects of rooibos tea

Overconsumption of this tea can lead to some side effects on the liver and kidneys of some sensitive individuals.
